The Serious Sam 4 teaser trailer is just that. It’s short and fun and doesn’t reveal much of anything. The teaser shows a soldier resting comfortably in a field, when suddenly a wave of Serious Sam villains charges at him. Just as the soldier falls to the ground believing he has no chance, the enemies run straight by him. They weren’t running at him, they were running away from something else. That’s when Serious Sam himself crests the hill using a Sirian Werebull as a mount. He chases after the horde, weapons blazing.

It’s a fitting teaser for the Serious Sam franchise. In a normal shooter, represented by the soldier, such a wave of enemies would be overwhelming. In Serious Sam, it’s not even threatening. The horde of Reptiloids, Gnaars, Kamikazes, and Bio-Mechanoids better find some friends if they want a chance against Serious Sam.

But the trailer isn’t just a thematic presentation, either. It also teases one of Serious Sam 4’s biggest changes. The Legion System is some new tech that Croteam has implemented for Serious Sam 4. According to the devs, the Legion System will allow them to put “an order of magnitude” more than even 10,000 enemies on-screen at a time. “We crank it up to eleven,” says Croteam.

It’s a pretty consistent statement among Croteam, judging from these early trailers, that Serious Sam 4 will mark one of the biggest steps forward for the franchise since the First Encounter. Whether it’s enemies, weapons, or simply the scale of battle, Serious Sam 4 will deliver exactly what fans of the franchise want next.

Also confirmed, and perhaps the most important feature of all for Serious Sam fans, is the return of cooperative play. Serious Sam will feature 4-player co-op just like previous iterations in the franchise. And considering just how big some of the Serious Sam 4 levels are, and how many enemies will be spread across them, teams are going to need all four.

Serious Sam 4 releases on PC and Stadia in August.
