It is a mystery how many exist in the Shadow of the Colossus remake, where they are, or what they even unlock. There’s not even a trophy for the collectibles. While many people refer to them as gold coins, the end credits suggest that there are “79 steps to enlightenment,” meaning there could be 79 of these collectibles. They appear as shining lights on the ground, but it seems they are located in areas difficult to reach, such as the top of climbable rocks or in hidden caves. A small noise comes out of the controller speakers when near, however, so there is some assistance.

On the bottom left corner of Shadow of the Colossus’ map, there are a couple of clouds with a counter for these enlightenments, so they are possible to track. The leading theory is that once all the enlightenments are found, the clouds will part and reveal a new island. Perhaps there will be a Colossus there to fight, as the end credits also suggest the existence of a “Nomad Colossus,” and it seems likely to be more difficult to beat than the Wanderer.

It seems that the Shadow of the Colossus community needs to come together to find these collectibles. At the time of this writing, 72 enlightenments seem to be the highest number found, which means there may be only seven more to go. Check out the video above for ways to contribute to the cause.

With Bluepoint Games’ stellar success with Shadow of the Colossus, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it is taking on another classic game. It remains to be seen what classic game the developer is tackling, much like it remains to be seen what the enlightenments unlock. Hopefully, there will be resolution to the latter soon. Have you found any really obscure enlightenments, Ranters?

The Shadow of the Colossus remake is available now on PS4.
