The widespread love and admiration for the original Shadow of the Colossus led to the game getting a remaster back in 2018, and one indie developer known as No Matter Studios is bringing about its own action-adventure game heavily inspiried by Shadow of the Colossus. Praey for the Gods was initially released as an early-access title in 2019, and sees the player enter a frozen wasteland to bring down the very gods of the world. Praey for the Gods was met with excitement from the gaming community and was funded successfully through Kickstarter.

Praey for the Gods has not always had an easy road to release though, with some claiming the early-access build was messy. Multiple years of disappearance without updates or news, the game’s development seemed a tricky thing for the three developers at No Matter to accomplish. Creating the game became a trickier process still when Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer Bethesda noticed the game’s original title, which was “Prey for the Gods.” Considering Bethesda already had a game called Prey, and No Matter didn’t have the resources to fight back, the name was changed, though it was allowed to keep the original logo for the game.
Now, more than half a year after the game was initially meant to be released, Praey for the Gods is finally available as a full release. The game seems less inspired by Shadow of the Colossus and more an attempt by the developers to create their own spin on the original game, which will allow players once again to track and hunt beasts larger-than-life. Environmental effects, lighting and the overall colour palette have seen an update since the game last had a trailer or showed any content.
It was revealed back in early 2021 that Praey for the Gods would be using next-gen technology, and No Matter announced these new features alongside a release window of early 2021. While the latter promise wasn’t kept, the game does seem to make use of next-gen features. It runs at 60FPS with enhanced graphics, and utilizes the DualSense controller technology of the PS5 when the player is travelling or using the bow.
Praey for the Gods is available now on PC, PS5, PS4 and Xbox One.
